KOCHI: Data stored at the collectorate’s server room can be lost any moment due to a host of factors. The servers are placed in such a shoddy manner that a small fire or accident can destroy volumes of data stored here.
Servers at civil station, Kakkanad are placed in a 40 sq ft room with just an entrance that makes it difficult to move them in case of an emergency.
Sources said that the server room is always hot and its power backup system is placed so carelessly that it may explode.
An ideal server room should have a ventilated area of 200 sq ft that is designed in such a manner that in case of an emergency the servers can be shifted easily. The room should also have enough fire fighting equipment and a minimum power backup for six hours.
Officials said that most of the time power supply to the servers is disrupted leading to automatic system shutdowns. Data from various departments and taluk offices are stored here. With the district administration about to implement the e-district project, the situation can get worse as more data would be stored in these servers. An official in the technical section said that despite continued requests to shift the server room to a much larger space, the administration has not taken any action.
“Though ample space is available in the new block of civil station and collectorate block, authorities are yet to shift the server room,” an official said.
When contacted, a senior official in the district informatics office said that they have informed the collector about this and authorities promised to change the location at the earliest. But it is learnt that the district administration is also facing fund crunch and this might hamper their shifting plans.
